In any area of life, following through on commitments can bring many rewards to your life. You might hear about this a lot in leadership or business circles, because following through tends to increase your chance of experiencing success.
But this also applies to your personal life. Whether you follow through in the area of spending quality time with your family, exercising, or eating healthy, the reality is that following through matters.
What is commitment?
There’s a difference between desire and commitment. When you desire to do something, you may do or not do something depending on how you feel. But when you make a commitment to do that thing, you follow through and do it no matter how you feel.
Take starting a Real Estate Investing business for example. Let’s say you’ve had the desire to start invest in real estate for years, but you’ve never followed through. Your desire is there, but your mindset is “take it or leave it”. But when you commit to making this desire come true, turning it into reality, you follow through whether you feel like it or not. You make the time and you take action day after day, month after month.
Now sure sometimes things happen, and you absolutely cannot follow through with something. This is understandable but be sure you’re the type of person that will be honest with yourself if you’re slacking on following through. Ask yourself if it’s an excuse or a legitimate reason for not following through.
The benefits of an action plan
One great reason to have an action plan is to hold yourself accountable to your commitments. To have a strict goal with steps along the way is like holding a mirror up to you when the going gets tough. It will show you how much effort you have actually put in, without any the excuses getting in the way. Zig Ziglar is a man who understood commitment well, saying “It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action, and discipline that enabled us to follow through.”
Discipline takes courage and commitment in your personal life, as well as your professional life, and it’s a primary ingredient for success.
Are you disciplined? Are you committed to following through? Or do you flake out a lot of the time on your commitments? Are you all talk and no walk?
If so, decide today to change this about you. Decide to be the kind of person that follows through with commitments in every area of your life. Start with your Real Estate Investing business. Commit to yourself to go through one training every day or do one piece of work that will push the business forward. If committing is hard don’t try and get it all done in a day, instead start small. Before you know it, you will have people wondering how you are able to stay so disciplined and committed.
