Digestion Issues? Try These Helpful Foods

Digestion Issues? Try These Helpful FoodsThe process of digestion is a complicated process composed of many steps needed to break down ingested food items to absorb the vitamins, minerals, calories, fats, and the proteins into the cells. Then, to complete the process, it eliminates what isn’t necessary for the body anymore.

Chances are you haven’t thought a lot about the process of digestion unless your system has failed to work correctly. Whether that’s experiencing constipation, acid reflux, GERD, diarrhea, or some other digestive issue, having a problem can motivate you to learn a solution.

There are plenty of foods you can eat to aid in the process of digestion. It’s merely a matter of learning what foods are beneficial and committing to consuming them regularly. Of course, if you’re experiencing digestion problems, consulting with a physician is certainly recommended. A friendly reminder that before starting any new exercise or dietary regimen, be sure to check with your health care providers.

Fiber-rich foods

Fiber is essential for overall digestion, especially in preventing any form of constipation. It helps keep the bowels moving consistently, which is undoubtedly beneficial. Foods high in fiber include spinach, citrus fruits, broccoli, beans, yellow vegetables, whole grains, cauliflower, pears, and carrots. In your meals strive to have at least three servings of whole-wheat or whole-grain to boost the intake of fiber.

Probiotics

The human gut has a lot of bacteria, therefore to improve the good to bad bacteria ratio, it is helpful to eat foods that include probiotics. Examples of probiotics include bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, which help improve gut sensation, motility and keeping the lining of the colon healthy. Good bacteria can be found in fermented foods like miso, yogurt, Kefir, garlic, and sauerkraut.

Foods that soothe

Eat foods that soothe, like fennel, caraway, cinnamon, cardamom, oatmeal, cumin, ginger, mint, nutmeg. Foods called carminatives prevent and relieve gas, thereby improving digestion. Cumin, for instance, helps to digest black beans, and this is why it is often found together in recipes.

Increase stomach acid

You may think that indigestion and heartburn come from a highly acidic stomach, but research indicates that it’s actually when the stomach doesn’t have enough acid that it struggles. To boost your stomach acid, consider drinking a glass of water with 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar before each meal. You can also hydrate through the day with a glass of water and freshly squeezed lemons to help with creating an acidic balance in the belly.

Hydrate

While water isn’t food, it is crucial for a smooth sailing digestive tract. Drink between 6 to 8 glasses of water each day and keep caffeinated and sugary drinks to a bare minimum.

Digestion is an important body function, so you want to be sure that you are doing the best you can when it comes to aiding it. It’s not always easy to reach for healthy foods, but the extra effort is worth it. Keep these tips in mind and continue to educate yourself when it comes to taking care of yourself physically. As you do, you’ll most likely just feel better mentally and physically – being more proactive in your health!
